Exclusive: Dead Sara Talks Music, Muse, and Getting Bitten by Ian Somerhalder

The fourth season of The Vampire Diaries treated us to some amazing tracks, but no one jolted our music-loving souls more than Dead Sara did with their scorching beats.
Dead Sara is a rock band comprised of four members, each with enough raw, electrifying talent to command our full attention. There’s lead singer Emily Armstrong, guitarist Siouxsie Medley, bassist Chris Null, and drummer Sean Friday, and their self-titled debut album released on April 10, 2013. And, just like My Morning Jacket had done at the Mystic Falls homecoming fiesta in Season 3, all four of them went right for the kill by performing live in TVD episode 4×17, “Because the Night.”
While the band got the party off to a howling start by playing their single “Lemon Scent” as well as a cover of Patti Smith’s “Ask the Angels,” Rebekah, Damon, and no-humanity Elena — who were in NYC for a weekend of debauchery and fun — got down with their bad selves on the dance floor and sucked club patrons dry. Basically, a good time was had by all so we knew we had to reach out to Dead Sara to express our gratitude for their contribution to TVD nightlife and to get all the juicy details about their experience on set. Check out our exclusive interview below!
Get all the juicy details about Dead Sara’s new album and experience on set in our exclusive interview below!
Alloy Entertainment: How did the Vampire Diaries gig come about?
Emily: A fan/friend that works on the show chose our band to be the “punk, rock n roll old school band” that was needed for a scene.
Alloy Entertainment: What was it like filming the underground club scene with Ian, Nina, and Claire?
Emily: It all happened really fast and we were all just so tired from a really busy week with no sleep. They were all nice and super accommodating.
Chris: Being on set with everyone who is a part of the show was great. Everybody was super easy to work with and we had a nice long day hanging in Mystic Falls. Also, Emily got bitten…by Ian Somerhalder. As far as we all know she didn’t change into a vampire…yet.
Sean: I thought the snack bar was awesome and Ian thought otherwise.
Alloy Entertainment: You described Muse’s show in Rolling Stone as “f*cking unreal.” How would you want TVD viewers to describe your performance after seeing it this Thursday?
Emily: Energetic. Rock n roll.
Chris: F*cking unreal.
Sean: Dope! Rad! Sick!
Alloy Entertainment: You all have so much energy while on stage. Where does this your awesome grunge power stem from?
Emily: The music really. If the music I play doesn’t make me move I have trouble playing it. And raw, loud, rock gets me hyped up!
Chris: Sucking the blood out of people’s necks before the show… It’s sometimes hard to get the promoter or club owner to provide people in our dressing room so we can do this before we go on stage. Our tour manager and management do a pretty good job of lining this up though. I think the best answer to that question is we all kind of feel what we feel while playing a song… Emotions come out, adrenaline gets going and you kind of can’t help yourself.
Sean: I don’t really know. We just play how we play.
Alloy Entertainment: What’s your favorite memory of being on the road so far? And what do you miss most about home?
Emily: It’s all made up of certain moments. Some shows we play make us think afterwards, “this is the reason we are doing this!”. Being away from home could be a drag only cause I’m out of my comfort zone. But that only makes it exciting.
Chris: The end of the tour party with Muse in Vegas was one of my favorite moments of the tour… Everyone just hanging out and dancing and having fun… I miss my own bed and friends.
Sean:The last show in Vegas and the after party was so fun. I didn’t want to end the tour and come home. Also we went blowing with Muse mid tour and they kicked our asses 3 games in a row.
Alloy Entertainment: Tell us a little more about your debut album! What’s the inspiration behind “Lemon Scent,” “Face to Face,” and “Whispers and Ashes”?
Emily: Ha! Those songs come from different places. The way we tend to write starts from a guitar or bass riff and I’ll just start singing from there. There is a mood from the song that tends to provoke lyrics or some sort of story and we go from there.
Alloy Entertainment: What are your most guilty pleasures?
Emily: Really bad pop artists with amazing production. It’s weird. It’s like, “this is so bad but so good.” The genius behind it all.
Chris: Hot Tamales, Sour Patch Kids
Sean: Cuddling and fighting. JK.
Alloy Entertainment: Time for some morbid fun! Who are the top three most badass vampires ever and what would be your preferred way to slay one if you had to?
Emily: Tom Cruise in Interview with a Vampire. The guy from True Blood.
And Damon from The Vampire Diaries.
Chris: Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Dracula. Stakes and hearts, stakes and hearts.
Sean: Me, myself, I. I am the only [vampire].
