Bellus Magazine (BM):  We are so excited for your new EP “TEMPORARY THINGS TAKING UP SPACE”!!  What inspired the creation of this EP?

Emily Armstrong of Dead Sara (EA):  We have been writing for the past 2 years and have probably 100 songs from that time. It was the development with Atlantic Records and producer Tony Hoffer that encouraged us that we had solid songs to make an EP. We’ve always been doing it on our own; this is our first major label and we listened. We were lost in the midst of writing for a while so hearing the possibility of an EP we were like, “Let’s do it!”

BM:  “Unamerican” is so damn good!  What’s the story behind this song?

EA:  We were putzing around in the studio and we asked ourselves “What is Keith Richards’ guitar tuning?” This sparked an idea and the riff was the first thing written. I had lyrics and concepts in my head that could only be played in a playful way so they fit perfectly. The verses you hear are played how they were written. At the time the song was created, it seemed like the world was imploding. We wrote it that day; it was like a lightning bolt that was inspired by those feelings.

BM:  What can you tell us about “Heaven’s Got a Back Door”?

EA:  “Heaven’s Got a Back Door” came from a blues riff that started in my head. I like the phrase “heaven’s got a back door” and we started writing around that. It started out slow and we sped it up and made it peppier. The title sums up the song; you can get away with a lot of stuff, still be alright, and have a chance to be a decent person.

BM:  With this new EP you teamed up with some amazing artist like producer Tony Hoffer, writer Tommy English and Simon Katz.  What has that experience been like for your band?

EM:  It’s opened so many doors. It’s been great writing wise and you get a better understanding of each other with chemistry and personality. I love understanding what motivates people so it’s only right that I go in and work with other like minds. You get to tap into their artistry and see how they do things. This is just the beginning of that and I love it.

BM:  How long have you been working on this EP?  Any good stories you can share with us from this journey?

EA:  We’ve been writing for the past 2 years, and we didn’t really know what we were writing for. We worked the hardest we ever had and it made sense to do an EP. We would test the songs acoustically; this is how we determined what would stick and what lyrics resonated most. Then we would edit the original.

BM:  “We finally have the music we’ve been looking for” was stated by Emily Armstrong (you).  With that being the case are you excited to perform this live to your fans and is there an upcoming tour planned?

EA:  A tour is being planned and we’re more than thrilled to play the new and old songs. I’m excited to bring friends on tour, meet fans and make new friends. Music and art are more prevalent now than ever, and bringing people together is a beautiful thing. We’re excited to make people happy for a little bit.

BM:  What advice can you give to other artist out there working to expand in this current climate?

EA:  When the going gets tough, you have to put your head down, put one foot in front of the other, and keep going.

BM:  Whats next for Dead Sara?

EA:  Touring and more writing and recording. This upcoming release is just an EP, there’s definitely more to come soon.
